V-Day B-Day

Every Valentine's Day for the last dozen years has also been a birthday celebration for my oldest nephew. He had a very specific request for this year's birthday cake and for once(!) I got it exactly right. Chocolate layer cake with strawberry pieces baked inside the cake, chopped strawberries between the layers and sliced strawberries on top with a strawberry glaze.

I didn't think fresh strawberries would bake very well inside of the cake, so I used dried strawberries that I cut to raisin-sized pieces. I tossed them in flour before folding them into the batter to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the cake as it baked. It worked out rather nicely.

The little heart shaped mini-cakes were made without strawberries inside for those who don't like the combination of chocolate and strawberry.

Here's a view of the filling. Diced strawberries and strawberry glaze.

Chocolate covered strawberries, which were served on the side of the cake.

Cleveland Restaurant Week(s)

This past Sunday started Cleveland Restaurant Week, which is actually two weeks (excluding Saturdays) from November 2-7 and 9-14. During these weeks, participating Cleveland Independents restaurants offer three-course prix fixe menus at (relatively) cheap prices. I've had good, great and phenomenal experiences with restaurant week dinners in the past, and I'm looking forward to the ones I have scheduled this time around.
I'm behind on my restaurant reviews since I didn't have my camera for my recent dining experiences at Henry's at the Barn, Melt and Sergio's Sarava, but I took some shots at my first restaurant week dinner at Sarava (yes, it was good enough to go twice in less than three weeks) so maybe I'll do them all in one post.

History One Day Will Rave

I'm on a bit of a losing streak with Words with Friends. I've lost five of my last six matches. But, I got a great bingo today, which I hope means that I will soon be winning games again.

When I played this word I couldn't help but think of the Muppet version of The Frog Prince when Taminella keeps shutting up Robin by stuffing popovers in his mouth. "Have a popover froggy!"

Super Bowl Cookies

I was invited to a Super Bowl party that was also a potluck event. Naturally, I brought a dessert. I debated about what to bring, but ultimately I decided to make chocolate chip cookies because I thought I had all of the ingredients in (I didn't and had to run to the store on Sunday morning) and because they're ready in a flash.

I made one batch in a large pan so they would be thin enough to cut with a football cookie cutter after they cooled. I made the other batch with my signature no burnt chocolate chips on the bottom method. I used about a quarter cup of dark brown sugar and half a cup of light brown sugar instead of just a 3/4 cup of light brown sugar in the recipe to make the cookies a little browner.
I was surprised that the footballs were eaten faster than the regular shaped ones. I prefer the regular cookies. Actually, I prefer the edges that were left in the pan after the footballs were cut. I like a crispy cookie.

Unlikely like

My music taste is generally in the alternative genre, but I also like indie. And I love college radio.

Every once in a while I like something that can only be classified as pop. Usually, it's a sappy song with a good hook that gets me.

So here's the latest song that I hate to admit I like. The worst thing may be that it's by someone from American Idol. The horror!

I like this video. It's cute!
